Gyeongnam province has expanded its nationwide webtoon support, signaling a broader push to integrate storytelling with technology across Korea. The program’s annual funding has jumped from 45 million to 75 million won, enabling more projects to receive backing.
The number of projects funded each year is increasing as well, rising from ten to fifteen. Selected shows now receive between 3 and 5 million won, while the budget for assistant writers has grown from 20 million to 30 million won, expanding opportunities for the teams behind the scenes.
Webtoon Campus residents will gain access to AI story tools, reflecting a broader move to blend creative writing with artificial intelligence. The initiative also includes new facilities, such as long-night production rooms designed to support intensive, practical production work.
Last year’s webtoons performed well enough to reach broader markets within Korea, with some titles expanding into animation and other formats. Seoul Station Necromancer has been licensed for animation, while Sae-dong-ne secured a television licensing deal, indicating growing cross-media potential for Korean webtoons.
Notably, Who Is the Criminal? received a commendation prize, underscoring the quality and international appeal of Korea’s serialized storytelling. Together, these developments illustrate Korea’s strategy of translating strong narratives into tech-driven economic growth.
