South Korea, AMD deepen AI and semiconductor cooperation to accelerate national AI strategy

South Korea’s government announced a deepening of AI and semiconductor collaboration with AMD, the U.S. chipmaker. On the 19th, Im Moon-Young, deputy chairman of the National AI Strategy Council, and Ha Jung-woo, the Blue House AI and Future Planning Secretary, met with AMD CEO Lisa Su to discuss ways the two sides can pursue mutually beneficial AI cooperation.

The officials outlined Korea’s strategy to accelerate toward becoming a leading AI power, including building a nationwide AI highway as part of an effort to reach what they describe as the “AI 3강,” or AI top-three status. Lisa Su, according to the briefing, welcomed the opportunity to expand partnerships with Korea’s AI firms as a result of the visit.

Lisa Su expressed satisfaction that the visit has strengthened collaboration with domestic AI companies, signaling that ties with Korea could be deepened further through AMD’s open AI ecosystem. The government and AMD said they will broaden public-private cooperation so more Korean companies can create synergies within AMD’s open AI ecosystem.

Discussions also centered on reinforcing Korea’s global AI competitiveness and accelerating AI-driven transformation across regional industries. Officials described the talks as technically detailed and focused on practical collaboration rather than generic pledges.

Both sides pledged to continue building a globally open AI ecosystem that benefits all participants, with plans for further dialogue and concrete steps ahead. The arrangement aims to create a win-win framework that ties Korea’s rapidly expanding AI sector to AMD’s hardware and software platforms.

For U.S. readers, the talks underscore growing American-Korean collaboration in critical tech sectors. AMD remains a pivotal American semiconductor and AI hardware player, and Korea’s push to develop AI capabilities and integrate it into industry could influence regional supply chains, standards, and market opportunities for U.S.-based suppliers and investors.

Context for non-Korean readers: Korea has launched a national AI strategy coordinated by the National AI Strategy Council and guided in part by the Blue House’s AI and Future Planning Office. The term “AI highway” refers to nationwide infrastructure and ecosystem initiatives aimed at expediting AI deployment across sectors, while “AI 3강” signals an ambition to rank among the world’s top three AI powers. AMD’s open AI ecosystem refers to collaboration frameworks that allow multiple Korean firms to integrate with AMD’s hardware and software platforms.
