South Korea's Toss pulls third-party fintech feature after Hangang Water backlash

South Korea’s Toss, a leading fintech and digital wallet app, pulled a feature called the “Hangang Water Service” from its mini-app platform after a backlash from users, delivering the service only about a day after it appeared.

The service was developed and operated by an external partner within Toss’s mini-app ecosystem, which hosts multiple services inside a single app. Toss stated that it does not directly run this particular feature.

Critics argued that the term Hangang Water (a reference to the Hangang River) had been used by investors as an extreme, self-deprecating joke about investment losses, making it inappropriate for a financial platform.

Toss emphasized that the feature was added by a partner and that it would review its standards and operating procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The company said it removed exposure to the service in the morning after user backlash, noting the controversy had intensified since the previous day.

For U.S. readers, the episode illustrates broader issues around fintech platforms: how third-party developers are integrated into digital wallets, how content moderation and brand risk are managed, and how such governance can affect user trust, regulatory scrutiny, and potential cross-border partnerships in digital payments and app ecosystems. It highlights the delicate balance between encouraging innovative external services and maintaining appropriate, brand-safe experiences in financial apps.
