South Korea: 60-year-old man arrested on suspicion of arson in Daejeon.
A 60-year-old man has been arrested by the Daejeon Jungbu Police Station on suspicion of arson at a residential building after entering a neighbor’s unit and setting a fire, then fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred around 8:41 p.m. in Jung-chon-dong, within Daejeon’s central district. The suspect allegedly breached the door of a neighbor’s unit on the third floor of a multi-family dwelling and used a lighter to start a fire.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about seven minutes. One-room unit sustained damage, with prosecutors estimating property losses at around 1.3 million won. There were no casualties because the residents of the affected unit were not at home at the time.
Police were alerted by nearby residents and conducted a search that led to the suspect being detained about two hours later on a street near the building. The man reportedly lived directly below the damaged unit and entered the neighbor’s home by breaking the door lock with a fire extinguisher.

Investigation showed the suspect told police he started the fire because of floor-noise, but authorities found no conflict between him and the victim prior to the incident. The case remains under investigation.
Officials say they will apply for a detention warrant for the suspect, who faces charges of arson and related offenses for a residential structure. The rapid police response and the building’s security dynamics in a dense urban setting are likely to draw attention from observers outside Korea, including U.S. readers interested in fire-safety and crime within multiunit housing, as well as how local law enforcement handles such cases.
