Busan airline captain found dead at home; police seek former colleague as suspect

A serving airline captain was found dead from stab wounds at his home in Busan, South Korea, with police naming a former colleague as the principal suspect. The victim, described as a man in his 50s, was discovered in an apartment in Busanjin District around 7:15 a.m. on the morning of the 17th, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Police identified Captain B, a former coworker of the victim, as the main suspect and said they are actively pursuing his whereabouts. It is not clear which airline he previously worked for or whether he was still employed at the time of the incident.

Officials said the attack on the victim is believed to have occurred around 5:30 a.m. After the crime, Captain B is believed to have fled in the direction of Changwon, a city in South Gyeongsang Province.

In a separate incident the previous day, Captain B allegedly tried to assault another captain, Captain C, in Ilsan, a district of Goyang in Gyeonggi Province, but the attempt was not successful. Police are investigating whether the two incidents are connected.

Police say they believe Captain B held a grudge against pilots with whom he had previously worked, and they are examining motive and circumstances. Some pilots have reportedly sought police protection amid the inquiry.

This case unfolds in Busan and the wider Seoul metropolitan area, with Changwon and Ilsan representing major urban and economic hubs in Korea. Busan is Korea’s largest port city and a key logistics and transportation center, while the Seoul region is home to the country’s aviation network and major carriers.

For U.S. readers, the episode highlights safety and security considerations in the tied global aviation industry. Incidents involving airline personnel can affect crew morale, require heightened security protocols, and influence how international airlines manage staffing, vetting, and incident response across Asia’s interconnected air travel market. As U.S.-South Korea ties remain strong in trade and security, developments affecting Korea’s aviation sector can have broader implications for airline operations, supply chains, and traveler confidence in regional air travel. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have provided limited information beyond the reported details.
