POSCO FutureM Secures 1-Trillion-Won Synthetic Graphite Anode Contract, Vietnam Plant Planned
POSCO FutureM, the battery materials arm of South Korea’s POSCO group, on the 16th said it has signed a contract to supply synthetic graphite anode materials for electric-vehicle batteries worth about 1 trillion won. The five-year deal runs from 2027 to 2032, with the possibility of extending the supply period by mutual agreement. The client’s identity is being kept confidential through the contract’s term for competitive reasons, but industry watchers expect the period could extend to as long as 11 years, potentially lifting the contract value to around 2.2 trillion won.
This contract is the largest for POSCO FutureM since it entered the anode material business in 2011. The company has previously supplied graphite-based anode materials to domestic battery makers and General Motors, and last year signed a roughly 670 billion-won natural graphite anode materials contract with a major Japanese battery company and another global automaker in October.
POSCO FutureM framed the synthetic graphite deal as part of a broader package with its natural graphite contract, with plans to deepen cooperation into cathode materials and lithium business in the future. The move signals an intent to integrate further along the EV battery supply chain.
To support growing orders, POSCO FutureM announced on the 5th a plan to invest about 357 billion won to establish a synthetic graphite anode production facility in Vietnam, with capacity increases rolled out in phases. The company said the investment and plant expansion will strengthen its production ability to meet rising demand.
The company added that the current agreement completes its Phase 1 objective of securing a key customer, with Phase 2 orders expected to trigger additional investments. The staged approach reflects the expanding role of Asian-based suppliers in meeting global EV battery material needs.
Why this matters for the United States: the U.S. EV market depends on a diversified, secure supply chain for battery materials, including synthetic graphite for anodes. The deal illustrates how South Korean suppliers are expanding capacity and global reach, including in Southeast Asia, to serve automakers such as GM and other Western manufacturers. Increased production and regional diversification could influence price stability, supply reliability, and procurement strategies for American automakers and battery developers.
Context for readers: POSCO FutureM operates as a key materials supplier within Korea’s battery ecosystem and maintains supply relations with major global automakers and battery makers. Its planned Vietnam plant is part of broader regional expansion aimed at meeting rising demand for EV batteries across Asia and beyond.
