South Korea's National Changwon University launches four-campus system with LG HVAC research center

National Changwon University officially launched an integrated national university by absorbing Gyeongnam Province’s Geochang and Namhae colleges, creating a four-campus system that also includes Sacheon. The launch ceremony took place in Changwon at InSeong Hall, signaling the start of a campus network spanning Changwon, Geochang, Namhae and Sacheon.

The four-campus model aims to accelerate regionally tailored strategies, with each campus focusing on characteristics of its area while operating under a unified national university framework. The move consolidates resources to expand research and education across the southeastern region of South Korea.

At the ceremony, the university unveiled the “DNA+ 2030 Vision.” DNA stands for Defense, Nuclear, and Autonomous (smart manufacturing), reflecting the region’s targeted emphasis. Gyeongsangnam-do Province plans five years of focused operating funds and scholarships, while the Education Ministry pledged policy and financial support to push local specialization.

Before the ceremony, Education Minister Choi Kyojin and National Changwon University President Park Min-won visited LG Electronics’ Smart Park to explore collaboration. The partners aim to run joint projects in HVAC-related fields that involve mechanical, electrical, electronics, and artificial intelligence disciplines, training master’s and doctoral researchers.

LG Electronics has pledged to invest 54.5 billion won to build a dedicated HVAC research center at National Changwon University, with the intention of donating the completed facility to the university once construction is finished. The project underscores a public-private effort to strengthen advanced engineering talent pipelines.

Minister Choi stated that National Changwon University should become a regional hub for industry-academia-government collaboration in the Southeast, aligned with a national strategy described as five-pole, three-specialty for balanced regional development. The aim is to broaden regional innovation ecosystems and leverage local strengths.

For U.S. readers, the development highlights Korea’s approach to building resilient, tech-focused regional hubs that bridge defense, energy, and smart manufacturing with private-sector partnerships. Such hubs can influence global supply chains, cross-border research collaboration, and the availability of highly skilled engineers and researchers who work on AI, HVAC, and related advanced technologies. The LG partnership also signals potential pathways for U.S.-Korea cooperation in similar high-tech sectors.
