South Korea's National Changwon University launches four-campus merger targeting defense, nuclear AI

National Changwon University has announced a full-scale merger with Gyeongsnam-do’s Geochang University and Namhae University, launching a four-campus era across Changwon, Geochang, Namhae, and Sacheon. The integration was proclaimed at an inauguration ceremony held on March 13, 2026, at the university’s main campus in Changwon.

In remarks during the ceremony, NCU President Park Min-won described the merger as a step toward a seamless college-industry ecosystem, where education, research and industrial activity operate as one to drive regional innovation. He said the new integrated university would connect local industries, businesses and research institutions into a single, continuously evolving innovation network.

Governor Park Won-soo of Gyeongnam Province offered administrative and financial backing to help the integration take root, saying the merger should be stabilized and strengthened to build future competitiveness. He expressed hope that the integrated university would serve as a model for regional growth shared by both the state and the institution.

An agreement outlining the implementation of the integration was signed by the Ministry of Education, National Changwon University and Gyeongnam Province. The province pledged five years of support through 2030, covering operating expenses and scholarships to help stabilize the merged university. The Education Ministry will assist with specialization aligned to the integration plan, while NCU will conduct internal evaluations to execute the plan systematically.

NCU also unveiled its DNA+ 2030 vision, aiming to elevate the combined institution to a global top tier in DNA+ fields through AI-driven education and R&D transformation. The DNA framework focuses on Defense, Nuclear and Autonomous Smart Manufacturing as core areas, with a broader emphasis on related technologies and sectors.

The university outlined seven strategic directions to strengthen teaching and research competitiveness, including talent development and value-creating research innovation; enhanced industry-academia-local collaboration and glocal innovation; reinforced student success and growth support; and administrative, financial and AI-enabled transformation for future specialties.

Each campus will be specialized to leverage local strengths. The Changwon campus will emphasize K-Defense, nuclear, and smart manufacturing, supplemented by eco-friendly energy and nanobiotechnology initiatives. The Geochang campus will focus on K-Defense and smart manufacturing, with programs in health care and anti-aging. Namhae campus will target K-Defense and nuclear industries plus tourism integration, with cross-campus collaboration to weave these strengths into a broader regional framework. Sacheon will also be integrated into the same four-campus plan, completing the nationwide reach of the merged university.

Before the ceremony, Education Minister Choi Kyo-jin and several university leaders visited Changwon LG Electronics’ Smart Park for a field tour and on-site discussions, underscoring the event’s emphasis on industry engagement and regional innovation.

Context for U.S. readers: Korea’s consolidation effort at National Changwon University reflects broader trends in higher education and regional development that have implications for U.S.-Korea collaboration in defense tech, energy, advanced manufacturing and AI. The four-campus model aims to knit together talent pipelines, research and industry in a way that could enhance potential partnerships with American universities and companies seeking access to Korea’s advanced manufacturing, defense and energy sectors, as well as opportunities for joint research, student exchanges and cross-border supply-chain innovation.
