Suncheon Announces Investment Pact with Genesis BBQ for Hotel District Near Suncheonman Garden

Suncheon City in South Jeolla Province announced an investment agreement on the 13th with Genesis BBQ and the Jeollanam-do provincial government to develop a high-end hotel and related facilities near Suncheonman National Garden. The agreement is part of Suncheon’s strategy to boost stay-type tourism and build a global business infrastructure.

Under the MOU, Genesis BBQ plans to build a luxury hotel district on a site near the Suncheon Bay international garden and convention area. The development calls for a hotel district of 500 to 1,000 rooms, complemented by an international conference center and a water park, forming a large-scale integrated tourist complex.

Once fully underway, the project is expected to create between 1,200 and 2,500 new jobs, with significant ripple effects across local tourism and service industries. Officials say the investment would enhance Suncheon’s appeal as a destination for both visitors and business travelers.

The deal also aligns with Suncheon’s broader plan to establish a RE100-aligned semiconductor national industrial complex, aiming to attract global firms and investors by offering international-standard business infrastructure. This linkage highlights a broader push to blend tourism, technology, and industrial development.

As part of its broader growth strategy, Suncheon is pursuing the attraction of a Costco wholesale store to help form a combined tourism-retail cluster that would extend beyond the eastern Jeolla region to the wider Namhae coast economic zone.

Genesis BBQ chairman Yoon Hong-kyun, a Suncheon native, said that with K-food and K-culture drawing global attention, the company wants to help Suncheon become a hub for tourism in Gwangju and Jeonnam, investing in what he described as Korea’s best hotel to contribute to local tourism and culture.

Suncheon Mayor Noh Kwan-gyu said the investment underscores the city’s growth potential and competitiveness, calling the hotel project a long-standing civic aspiration and a new milestone for the region’s tourism sector. He stressed that the city aims to be a desirable destination for both tourists and investors, reinforcing a southern coast economic hub role.

For U.S. policymakers and business readers, the deal signals Korea’s broader strategy to attract high-end hospitality investment and to position regional clusters around renewable-energy and semiconductor development. If realized, the project could influence supply chains for tech firms, create potential opportunities for American suppliers and partners, and bolster cross-border tourism and retail links along the East Asia supply chain corridor.
