South Korea Broadcaster Kim Eo-jun Denies Pre-Charge-Deal Allegations Tied to Jang In-su's Claim

Broadcaster Kim Eo-jun has publicly rejected allegations tied to former MBC journalist Jang In-su’s claim of a “pre-charge-dropping deal,” describing the accusation as part of a “preliminary mock” controversy. He asserted that those who claim he and Jang conspired in advance cannot support their case with evidence.

Kim cited the process by which Jang made his remarks and argued that there is no basis to say he prearranged anything. He said records show Jang had not referenced what Kim had said on live air before Jang appeared on the program.

He also signaled he would respond firmly to any legal action, saying he welcomes lawsuits and would “bet everything on innocence” in confronting the allegations.

Earlier, a civic group filed charges against Jang for disseminating false information and simultaneously charged Kim with aiding and abetting in connection with those claims.

Jang In-su is identified as a former MBC journalist, while Kim Eo-jun is a broadcaster commonly associated with outspoken commentary. MBC, or Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation, is one of South Korea’s largest TV networks, alongside rivals such as KBS and SBS.

The case matters beyond Korea for U.S. readers because it highlights how defamation and media accountability are handled in a major Asian democracy with significant global media ties. Public disputes involving high-profile media figures can influence perceptions of press freedom, media credibility, and the regulatory environment that affects foreign media operators and advertisers in Korea.

For the U.S. market, the episode signals ongoing debates over misinformation, accountability, and the balance between free expression and legal safeguards in one of Asia’s largest economies. Civil-society involvement in pursuing or countering such claims also illustrates how media conduct cases can ripple into international business, policy, and cross-border reporting.
