Naver Maps Adds Real-Time Transit Safety Alerts for Korea's Subways and Buses

Naver Maps is updating its service to display real-time public-transport safety information, giving users access to incidents and delays as they travel. The update aims to help commuters plan safer, more reliable routes by reflecting changes in transit conditions as they happen.

The map now shows real-time alerts for disruptions that affect subway lines, bus stops, and train stations. Users can view these contingency notes from the directions or map views, enabling on-the-go adjustments to travel plans.

Naver says the system will expand to cover additional modes of transportation in the future, broadening the range of incidents that users can monitor. The change builds on a 2024 update that delivered more detailed incident information within users’ daily areas and strengthened disaster information guidance when navigating.

Jeong Kyung-hwa, head of Naver Map Planning, said the service remains Korea’s leading map app with around 30 million monthly active users and is committed to ensuring safe and efficient travel. He added that Naver will continue to enhance the platform to improve the travel experience.

For an international audience, the development highlights how major map platforms are embedding real-time safety data into navigation, potentially reducing delays and improving resilience for urban mobility. Such capabilities can benefit travelers, logistics firms, and global supply chains that rely on reliable transit information.

The move also signals broader trends in digital mapping and public-transport data sharing, relevant to U.S. readers as American companies and authorities increasingly invest in real-time transit feeds, disaster alerts, and integrated travel planning tools that cross borders and markets.

Context: Naver is a leading South Korean technology company, and Naver Map is a dominant domestic mapping service alongside KakaoMap. Korea’s dense urban transit network and high reliance on subway and bus systems make real-time safety information a practical priority for daily commuters and service providers.
