Incheon woman charged after infant death; neglect alleged for eldest daughter.

A woman in her 20s has been forwarded to prosecutors on charges that she neglected her 20-month-old daughter, leading to the child's death, with authorities also adding a charge of neglect toward her first-born daughter, who attends elementary school.

The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency identified the suspect as A and said she lived in Guwol-dong, Incheon. She was arrested on the 4th on a charge of neglecting the infant.

Police said A admitted to the alleged acts during questioning.

The National Forensic Service previously issued a verbal assessment indicating the death appeared to be caused by malnutrition.

The case has now been forwarded to the prosecution for review.

Incheon is Korea’s third-largest city, located near Seoul, and Guwol-dong is a neighborhood within Incheon.

For U.S. readers, the case illustrates how severe child neglect cases are pursued in Korea, the role of forensic evidence in determining causes of death, and how charges can expand to cover multiple children in a family. It also highlights Korea’s ongoing handling of child welfare matters within its legal system, a topic of interest for policies related to social services and international cooperation on family protections.
