Korean Air to take full ownership of CNDS, bolstering onboard catering and sales

Korean Air Lines announced on March 12 that it will acquire the entire 80% stake in CNDS, the company that handles its in-flight meals and onboard duty-free sales, from Han & Company, a domestic private-equity firm. Korean Air already owns 20% of CNDS, and the deal values the Han & Co stake at about KRW 750 billion. Upon closing, CNDS will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Korean Air.

CNDS was created to operate the airline’s catering and onboard shopping businesses, and Korean Air had sold CNDS in December 2020 to secure liquidity during the pandemic. The proposed acquisition would return CNDS to full ownership by Korean Air, reuniting it with the broader airline group.

Korean Air said the move aims to secure stable in-flight meal provisioning and strengthen service competitiveness as the group moves forward with its integrated-carrier strategy. The airline also plans to continue expanding onboard duty-free sales to enhance the passenger experience.

The transaction occurs against the backdrop of Korean Air’s broader integration with Asiana Airlines, forming a single, larger airline group. Centralizing CNDS within the merged entity is intended to streamline procurement, catering, and onboard sales across the network.

For U.S. readers, the deal matters because Korean Air is a major international carrier on routes to the United States. Any changes in CNDS’s sourcing, menu options, or onboard shopping could influence the quality and price of in-flight meals and duty-free products on trans-Pacific flights, potentially affecting competition with other global airlines on key U.S.–Korea routes.
