Korean Firm HS Hyosung Delivers Carbon-Fiber Prosthetic to Para-Cyclist Park Chan-jong

HS Hyosung Advanced Materials has delivered a carbon-fiber prosthetic leg to Park Chan-jong, a member of South Korea’s national Para-cycling team. The company said a delivery ceremony was held on the 11th, and it announced the arrangement on the 12th.

Park Chan-jong lost his left leg in a 2022 car accident and was reselected to the national team three years later. He is currently training for the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi and Nagoya, Japan.

His previous prosthesis was metal-based and heavy, raising concerns over long-distance cycling comfort and endurance. The new carbon-fiber device aims to address these issues by reducing weight and improving performance.

Carbon fiber is about one-quarter the weight of steel, with about 10 times the strength and 7 times greater elasticity, according to HS Hyosung. Production of the prosthetic limb was handled by HS Hyosung in collaboration with the Carbon Material Medical Device Development Support Center at Jeonbuk National University Hospital.

In delivering the prosthetic, Cho Hyun-sang, vice chairman of HS Hyosung, said Park’s motto that his legs have no limits mirrors the company’s philosophy of challenging the impossible and creating value. He expressed hope that the carbon fiber device would bolster Park’s performance on international stages.

Park Chan-jong expressed gratitude for a prosthetic tailored to his body and racing style, saying it gives him a “boost from advanced technology” and that he aims to deliver strong results at the Asian Games.

Beyond this individual case, carbon fiber’s rising use in lightweight, high-performance sports equipment and medical devices signals broader implications for global manufacturing and supply chains. The partnership also highlights Korea’s role in advancing next-generation materials that could affect markets and innovation ecosystems, including potential interest from American manufacturers and researchers in advanced composites. HS Hyosung has designated Park Chan-jong as an official ambassador since last year and says it will continue to sponsor and develop carbon-fiber sports equipment through ongoing R&D efforts.
