Nam Gyeong-ju, Veteran South Korean Musical Actor, Faces Forcible Rape Charge
A veteran South Korean musical actor, Nam Gyeong-ju, 62, has been handed over to prosecutors on charges of rape by force. The case stems from a police investigation that began after a woman reported the incident in Seoul.
Bangbae Police Station in the Seocho District said Nam was transferred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office without detention. The transfer followed police investigations into allegations that occurred last year in Seocho, involving a female victim identified in reports as A.
Nam has denied the accusations during police questioning, but investigators said there was sufficient evidence to forward the case to prosecutors. No formal charges have been disclosed publicly by the prosecution at this time.
Nam’s social media accounts are currently shut down, and there has been no official comment from him or his representatives. The public stance from the parties involved remains unknown as the legal process proceeds.
Nam is regarded as a leading figure in Korea’s first generation of musical theatre. He debuted in 1994 in the musical Porgy and Bess and has since taken leading roles in major productions such as Guys and Dolls, Mamma Mia, and Chicago. He also serves as an associate professor in the Performing Arts program at Hongik University.
This case matters beyond Korea for international audiences because it involves a prominent cultural figure in a field—musical theatre—that has strong global connections, including collaborations, touring, and licensing with U.S. companies. The outcome could influence perceptions of accountability in Korea’s performing arts sector, potential impacts on cross-border productions, and the reputational dynamics surrounding Korean cultural institutions. The investigation is ongoing, and additional details have not been released.
