Ansan man arrested after knife threats and assaults near Sunbu Station
A man in his 40s was arrested by police in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, after allegedly assaulting pedestrians and threatening them with a knife, authorities said.
The suspect, identified in reports as A, was taken into custody on the spot by officers from Ansan Danwon Police Station on charges of aggravated threats and assault. He was confronted by responders and then detained after a Taser was deployed.
The first victim was a man in his 40s identified as B. He was attacked while sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked car near Sunbu Station in Danwon District, Ansan. Police said the victims appeared to have no prior acquaintance with the suspect.
After the initial incident, A entered a nearby cafe, drew a 21-centimeter bread knife, and walked along the street, threatening a passerby described as a man in his 30s. The two victims were not known to each other.
Responding officers reported that A resisted arrest and was shocked with a Taser before being detained. Police said they believe A has an intellectual disability and will pursue an investigation into the motive behind the attacks.
Authorities said they will continue to investigate the circumstances and intent of the incidents. The case highlights urban public-safety concerns in South Korea and may prompt discussions in the United States about policing tactics, mental-health crisis response, and the handling of knife-related violence in busy city environments.
Ansan is a city in Gyeonggi Province, part of the Seoul metropolitan area, located near Incheon. The incident occurred in a densely populated area, illustrating how regional police respond to sudden violent threats in transit-adjacent neighborhoods.
